Water Quality

We cannot always trust our senses to determine the safety of our drinking water. Bacteria will not change the taste, smell, or colour of your water. Some potentially harmful contaminants cannot be detected by taste, sight or smell. On the other hand, there may be minerals and metals in your water that do leave signs that they are present. It is also very important to know what other contaminates can be in your well and how to avoid water quality problems.

If a water quality problem frequently occurs, try to find the source of the problem. This may mean removing the source of the problem, using a method of water treatment, repairing the lining or cap of your well (see proper well maintenance), or reconstructing your well in another location. There are certain acceptable distances between wells and possible sources of contaminants. If these guidelines are followed than the chances of contamination should be reduced.
