Preventing Interaction
The bacteria in your septic system are harmful to your well water so to reduce the risk of contamination, your septic system must be downslope from your well. Even though it may not appear that water from your system can have any effect on your well, you cannot see how the water is moving underground.
To help prevent your septic system from contaminating your well, there are acceptable distances between your well and septic tank and field. For a drilled well, your system tank should be located a minimum of 15 m away and 30 m away from any cesspools of sewage. For a dug well, there should be 15 m between the well and the tank and 30 m between the septic field.
If the septic system backs-up, your well may become contaminated. If wastewater can be seen at the ground surface, it may contaminate the ground around your well. Proper maintenance of your septic system will prevent this from happening.
