Moving From Dug to Drilled
Historically, it was common practice to drill a well inside the old dug well to upgrade, but this is no longer recommended because it allows for increased contamination risk of your new well. If you do drill in your dug well, ensure the drilled well casing extends above the surrounding ground level and above the top of the dug well casing. Remove a few meters of the old dug well lining. Then fill in the old dug well with the proper sealant or clean, crushed stone.
Keep in mind that if surface water can still enter the old well, it can slide down the outside of the drilled well casing and contaminate your well water. You must ensure a tight annular seal. Periodically check to see if the annular seal has gaps, if any surface water has built-up around the new drilled well, or if there is settling of the ground around the well. If any of these problems occur, add more clean, crushed stone and mound the ground around the well to prevent further surface water from entering your well.
