CasingAll wells should have a lining to protect the section of the upper section of the well from contaminants. Consider upgrading your lining if it is made of wood, galvanized steel or another type of metal because these materials can degrade over time adding chemicals and minerals or allowing vermin into your well water. The Sanitary Dug Well provides information on the proper construction of a dug well, and is accessible through this directory of information. You should also speak to your Environmental Health Officer. Drilled wells have linings installed during construction. For more information on maintaining your drilled well lining see Guidelines for Sealing Groundwater Wells, accessible through this directory of information. When constructing a lining, it is important to consider the materials used. Here are some safer suggestions: Food Grade Plastic Many plastics have additives that are considered harmful to humans and these substances may leech toxic chemicals into your well water. Food grade plastic does not have these additives and is safe to be in contact with your water. Any plastic will not be safe if it was in contact with non-food items like chemicals, paint, or detergent. To ensure that the plastic is food grade, check for certification by the FDA, Canada AG or similar group. Concrete Concrete rings can be installed in your well and are most commonly found in dug wells. Ensure that the soil used in making the concrete is free of potentially dangerous materials. PVC Piping PVC piping can be used in smaller diameter wells. This can be used for both dug and drilled wells. |
