Vehicle Emissions Clinic In Torbay

On August 17, 2004, a vehicle emissions testing clinic was held in Torbay to educate local residents on ways to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions produced by their vehicles. The clinic provided each participant with a free emissions test and an assessment of the amount of GHGs and other pollutants generated by his/her vehicle. Maintaining your vehicle ensures peak efficiency and reduces emissions that contribute to climate change. Improved vehicle efficiency also ensures good environmental performance and reduces the costs associated with driving your vehicle.

Approximately 81 people attended the clinic and were encouraged to sign on to further reduce their emissions. Overall, the event was a great success!

The Big Bike Ride For Heart

On September 30, 2004, a team of volunteers showed their support for reducing greenhouse gasses in St. John's as they rode a thirty-seat bicycle along a popular downtown route. This event was used to promote healthy living as well as the environmental benefits that accompany alternative forms of transportation. Transportation accounts for almost 50% of personal GHG emissions; therefore bicycling is an excellent way for individuals to begin meeting their own reduction target.

The team consisted of the Honourable Tom Osborne (Environment Minister for NL), representatives from sponsor and partner groups, Smokey the Bear, Green Santa and local volunteers. All participants have signed on to make a personal commitment to reduce their emissions by one tonne over the next year.

In addition, this event was used as a fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. All proceeds from the bike ride were donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in support of research and health promotion programs.
